When the WE Breaks Apart
A “we” does not always fall apart because it has stopped working long before.
Sometimes something breaks that, despite all its imperfections, has carried us for years. Something in which there was conflict and reconciliation, differences and compromises, hurt and renewed closeness. Something that was not perfect — but real.
And then comes that one moment when the structure you shared can no longer hold.
Then it is not only a relationship that breaks apart.
Your sense of self begins to tremble.
It is a moment of unimaginable pain, a moment that shakes you to your core. When someone who has been part of your inner sense of safety for years suddenly becomes a loss, you do not only lose another person. You lose a piece of your orientation.
The mind desperately searches for explanations, connections, for a reason — for a “why.” It reconstructs conversations, glances, situations and memories over and over again, trying to make sense of a reality that no longer fits the one you believed in.
And for me, that is the darkest part of this work…
It is not only the heart that asks, “How could this happen?”
Your own perception asks, “Can I still trust myself?”
This diptych therefore speaks of two states at once.
On one side is the breaking apart. The force of loss. The feeling that something which had provided stability for so many years is suddenly slipping through your hands.
On the other side, something begins that is almost invisible at first…
the return to oneself.
Perhaps sometimes a shared structure has to break apart before we realize how much of ourselves we had lost within it.
Perhaps that is why the “I” in this work is not yet a finished form. It has not fully arrived. It exists among the fragments, finding its way through pain, anger and confusion.
But it is there.
Still small.
Still vulnerable.
Still shaken.
And yet impossible to overlook.
“When the WE Breaks Apart” is therefore not only a diptych about the end of a love. It is a work about identity, loss, and the painful reclamation of the self.
Because sometimes the hardest moment is not the moment when the “we” breaks apart.
It is the moment afterwards, when you realize how close you came to losing yourself within it.
And that is exactly where something new can begin.
Not immediately.
Not easily.
Not without scars.
