What Remains

There are moments when it is not only a relationship that comes to an end. A part of one’s world ends with it. It is precisely at that point that this work asks its central question:

What remains?

What once felt unquestionable suddenly lies in fragments. The familiar loses its shape, the future becomes memory, and what was once a shared we transforms into an unfamiliar I.

This diptych emerged from that very in-between space—a place where anger and grief can become almost unbearable, yet where the faintest glimmer of hope quietly begins to appear.

The left canvas carries the force of that moment. Fragments shatter, lines lose their direction, forms collide. Everything seems to happen at once. Nothing remains where it once belonged.

The right canvas does not answer with peace. It does not deny the pain. Instead, it allows it to exist.

Between the few remaining forms, space begins to open. At first, that openness feels like emptiness. Yet it is precisely this emptiness that makes room for new possibilities. It speaks of loss, while at the same time suggesting that something new may eventually take shape.

This work offers no definitive answers. Instead, it invites reflection.

What remains of love when it ends?

What remains of shared memories?

What remains of ourselves when a part of our life suddenly disappears?

Perhaps what remains are the scars.

Perhaps longing remains.

Perhaps gratitude.

Perhaps anger.

And perhaps hope.

The fragments never truly disappear. They simply find a new order. They no longer speak only of what has been broken, but of the possibility that something entirely new can emerge from what was once shattered.

What Remains is therefore not a work about endings.

It is a work about continuing to live.

Not as the same person who existed before, but as someone who has learned that what is broken forever becomes part of one’s own story.

And perhaps that is the answer to the question the work asks:

What remains are not the shattered pieces. What remains is the light that quietly finds its way between them. What remains is the ability to keep loving despite everything—to love oneself, to love life, and perhaps, one day, to love another person again.
