…a painting by Witzig created on a very hot day in mid-May. 35 degrees in spring… what does one do on these days when sweating, one wishes nothing more than to live at the Arctic Circle… and then in the mind… the song “Eisbär” by Grauzone from the 80s. “…I want to be a polar bear in the cold polar regions, then I wouldn’t have to scream anymore, all of this would be so clear… polar bears never have to cry.” And as simple as the lyrics of the song are, so is Witzig’s new work. It shows the icy Arctic Circle with ice blue and white geometric shapes that look like ice crystals or icicles… and that is exactly what the painting conveys… a painted longing for ice on a terribly unbearable hot day… nothing more and nothing less.
